The Fed announces its next move on October 28.
Larry Benedict is watching one ticker before it does.

Benedict, a longtime hedge fund trader, says the new Fed chair has set off the biggest shift in U.S. markets in about 20 years. He has picked the one ticker he thinks sits at the center of the money flow, and he names it in a short briefing. See the ticker.

KEY TAKES

Meta's quarter knocked the AI trade over into the final hour. Revenue beat ($64.60B vs $63.34B) and the Q4 guide ($73-76B) brackets consensus. META is still -7.1% at $648.16 as of 1:18 PM ET because of spend: 2026 capex now $135-145B, and a $9.9B legal charge sank EPS to $3.83 vs $6.54 expected.

Chips took the worst of it (SOXX -6.2%, MU -5.7%, NVDA -4.1%, INTC -7.2%). SPCX (-7.3%) and AMZN (-4.3%) followed, and TSLA is -1.8% after a Q3 revenue miss. Money hid in Treasuries (TLT +1.8%), defensives, and AAPL (+0.7%). VXX is up 5.6% and oil is higher on Saudi attacks (USO +1.7%), while gold slips (GLD -2.2%) and the Dow sits nearly flat.

TODAY'S TOP 5 GAINERS

1 · STAK +68.0% · $1.68. Fiscal 2026 results late Wednesday: swung to a thin full-year profit (oilfield equipment). A $1 stock on 73.8M shares is a crowd trade.

2 · NCPL +53.8% · $2.42. No fresh company news; bouncing after a 22% drop Wednesday while law-firm solicitations circulate. Noise: dead-cat bounce, no catalyst.

3 · XLAB +43.9% · $3.92. No dated company release on the wire. Noise: volume without a reason.

4 · SAIQ +34.7% · $7.49. Rebounding from a similar drop at Wednesday's close; a paid-promotion piece on a cybersecurity validation ran at 12:10 PM ET. Noise: round trip plus promotion.

5 · PFSA +34.3% · $1.14. No fresh news; hit a new 52-week low on Oct 21. Noise: short-covering off a low.

Noise: Four of five have no fresh company-specific catalyst (NCPL, XLAB, SAIQ, PFSA). The real catalysts sit just under the top five: BIO-key (BKYI +29.5% to $2.72) on another Middle East government contract and Biohaven (BHVN +26.8% to $14.90) after the FDA accepted its Vyglxia resubmission.

THE SIGNAL

Meta beat on revenue and still lost 7%, and the credit market says why. Meta's five-year credit default swaps hit a record 119.3 basis points on worries about roughly $825B of future lease and compute commitments. When bond traders charge more to insure a company as profitable as Meta, the AI build-out stops coming cheap. Who's exposed: the suppliers whose revenue is Meta's capex, which is why chips fell 6% while Meta's own Q4 guide was fine.

Wrong if: chips recover half of today's 6% drop by Friday's close, which would say this was a one-day positioning flush, not a repricing of AI spend.

HEADLINE OF THE DAY

“Top Midday Stories: Meta Credit Risk Gauge Hits Record High Amid AI Spending Plans; Tesla Q3 Revenue Misses Consensus”

MT Newswires | Oct 22, 11:55 AM ET

Meta's 5-year CDS rose as much as 8.9bp to a record 119.3bp, tied to about $825B in future leases and contracts mostly for AI computing. Same report: Tesla Q3 revenue $28.05B missed. Equity priced the spend. Debt is doing it now.

ONE TO WATCH

TLT (iShares 20+ Year Treasury Bond ETF) · $81.66 (+1.77% as of 1:18 PM ET) · Fed rate decision Wed Oct 28. Treasuries caught the money leaving AI today. If TLT keeps rising into that print, the market is betting the AI scare slows the economy enough to tie the Fed's hands.
