The early rally faded. The S&P 500 gave back a gain of as much as 1.1% and closed down 0.51%, as AI names sold again (AMD -7.52% to $466.84 a day before its report, Palantir -3.13%, Apple -1.83%, Nvidia -1.26%).
Oil kept its whole drop: crude down 7.4% to $96.46 on U.S.-Iran talks through Qatari mediators about reopening the Strait of Hormuz; Exxon -4.05%, and the Dow held green (DIA +0.43%).

THE CLOSE

SPY closed 752.10 (-0.48%), QQQ 681.09 (-1.36%), DIA 519.34 (+0.43%), IWM 279.14 (-0.07%). Tech sellers came back after a strong open. Cheaper oil kept the Dow up. Factory data helped a little: ISM manufacturing printed 55.5 vs 54.5 expected and the prices index eased to 75.2. Gold was firmer (GLD +1.65%) and TLT slipped 0.13%.

Did the 3 PM read hold? Half held. Oil kept the drop and the Dow stayed green, but the early index gains were gone by the bell. The Wednesday oil test is still open.

AFTER THE BELL

PLTR beat and raised. Q3 EPS $0.44 vs $0.41, Q4 guide $2.649B to $2.653B vs $2.46B, FY26 about $8.53B. Commercial $984M beat government $953M. Up 1.5% at $181 after hours (The Fly, 4:46 PM ET) after a -3.13% close.

AAPL Q4 revenue $114.5B vs $113.4B, Services $31.57B, margin 47.9% (1 point from tariff refunds). Down $2.92 to $334.50 (The Fly, 4:35 PM ET).

TOMORROW'S SETUP

All day. Midterm Election Day. Markets are open; results come in after the close.

Before the open. Shopify and Pfizer report (Pfizer call at 10:00 AM ET).

10:00 AM ET. JOLTS job openings for September, plus September factory orders.

After the close. AMD reports, call at 5:00 PM ET. Arista, Super Micro, Amgen and Duolingo also report.

ONE TO WATCH TOMORROW

AMD (Advanced Micro Devices) closed $466.84 (-7.52%), reports Tuesday after the close (call 5:00 PM ET), down from $578.44 on Oct 28. After Friday's 10.88% drop and today's, the guide decides how chips trade this week. Wrong if AMD guides above estimates and the stock still can't hold a gain Wednesday; then the selling is about AI spending, not AMD's numbers.
