KEY TAKES

  • Banks sold the prints that failed the forward test. Citi closed −5.60% after an EPS beat and a raised NII outlook. WFC finished −3.10%. JPM faded from green midday to −0.86%.
  • After the bell, BAC took more than $1.21B in AML and sanctions penalties and a $1.2B Q3 charge, ahead of Wednesday's 8:30 AM ET CPI.

THE CLOSE

Tuesday closed on the guidance test. Citi still finished −5.60% after the beat, worse than −3.62% at midday. SPY 778.01 (−0.01%), QQQ 743.57 (−0.33%), DIA 516.21 (−0.33%), IWM 276.70 (−0.43%). Banks sold, semis stayed soft (MU −3.62%, SMH −0.49%), energy kept the bid (XLE +1.80%, USO +1.36%), and META finished green at +2.63%. Did the 3 PM read hold? It held. Citi never recovered to green, so the Wrong if did not fire.

AFTER THE BELL

BAC closed 53.96 (−1.14%). Treasury penalties exceed $1.21B for AML and sanctions violations, with a $1.2B non-tax-deductible Q3 charge. After hours, shares traded near $52.70.
