📊 THE SETUP

The whole week is one number at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday

Kevin Warsh told the room at Jackson Hole he would be tough on inflation. Friday’s CPI gave him no reason to soften. Annual inflation sits at 3.4% against a 2% target, and a quarter-point hike Wednesday is now close to a formality.

Here is the part most people missed. Stocks rallied the moment that CPI print hit. The market did not flinch at the hike. It voted for it. That is a very different tape than the one that spent four straight sessions selling off into higher oil and higher yields.

Which means Wednesday’s risk is not the rate. It is the language. A quarter point is already in the price. What is not in the price is how Warsh describes the road after it, with crude above $100 on the Iran conflict and the 10-year yield sitting just under 5% after nearly touching it Friday.

The week finished red even with Friday’s 509-point Dow bounce. Dow −1.6%, S&P −0.8%, Nasdaq −0.7%. Nobody has won anything yet.

📅 THE THREE DAYS THAT MATTER

MONDAY  Nothing on the calendar
No major U.S. economic data. A $18 billion 20-year Treasury auction at 1:00 p.m. and a retail conference in New York. That is it. Traders read an empty calendar as a quiet day, which is backwards. With no macro print to hide behind, individual names trade on their own stories and their own volume. Monday gaps hold or fail on their own merit, not on a headline. Tim Bohen builds his week around that quirk on purpose. His scan runs Monday morning looking for low-priced names with their own catalyst and a float thin enough to move without help from the tape, and it is flagging one right now. On a calendar this empty, that is the kind of setup that actually gets room to run.
WEDNESDAY  Retail sales 8:30, Fed 2:00
August retail sales land five and a half hours before the decision, so the morning tape and the afternoon tape will be two different animals. Position sizing matters more than picks on a day like that.
THURSDAY  Bank of Japan, then Philly Fed
The BOJ meets the 17th and 18th. Japan moves global yields overnight, which is exactly the channel that has been hurting U.S. stocks for two weeks. Philly Fed and pending home sales fill out the morning.

⚠️ THE CROWDED SIDE OF THE BOAT

Friday’s rally had two engines and both of them were server companies. Hewlett Packard Enterprise up about 11%, Dell up about 10%, Cisco leading the Dow at +4.1%. One theme carried a 509-point day.

That is worth sitting with. When a single trade is doing all the lifting, the market has less margin for error than the index level suggests. Oracle is the warning inside the same week: strong results, good cloud outlook, opened higher, gave the entire move back by the close.

So the question for Monday is not whether the AI buildout is real. It is whether the strength broadens out of it. If Monday’s green comes from the same four names, the rally is narrow and it is fragile. If it spreads into small caps and the rest of the tape, that is a different story entirely. Build your list tonight, mark the levels, and let Monday’s first half hour tell you which one you are in. Do not front-run it.
